Help! Trying to a 100% homemade media recipe that doen't require replating
Question Help! Trying to a 100% homemade media recipe that doen't require replating

So first of all thank you to everyone who recorded the recipes in the first place .
My goal here is planning the recipe with natural ingredients ( rather achievable ) . The recipe should be good and fewer transfers unless it is helpful to make a number of different media flask types by growth stage .
Oh , and I prefer to use Gelatin over agar ( how to convert ? ) . Unless it is not possible.
Also sould I wait 5-6 days to check that the flasks are not contaminated by fungi which may kill the plants, before I could sow the orchid seeds.
I got as a gift Hygrochilus parishii 1,000 seeds which Colleted at Feb-14 will recive by mail soon. I want to post my progress and make a guide step by step for an easy life for everyone.
THANK YOU!

Not sure what "Bgltin" is? Gelatin?

My only experience is with the Dokmai Dogma recipe. It does not meet your criteria of not needing to replate, however. When I have used it, when the protocorms seem large enough to survive, I have moved them on to heat-sterilized and slightly damp sphagnum. The seedlings grow very slowly but do eventually grow roots.

After trying several home-made recipes I caved in and decided to stick to Sigma P-6668. So far so good without replating. My seedlings have roots that grow nicely into the growth medium.

I'm sowing the laziest way without a glove box, but by using hydrogen peroxide as sterilizing liquid in the flask, and I manage to get germination on the P6668, but struggled with home-made recipes.

Nevertheless, I think all kinds of experiments are good and we need to try to tweak it to fit our needs and resources, so best of luck to you! And your protocorms.

Long ago when I used pots quite a bit, I concocted a series NZ sphagnum moss and pumice stone mixes.
The idea being that neither would break down nearly as fast as the bark mixes do.
It seemed to work very well for me.
I have since converted over to purely moss, and don't use pots much at all anymore.
Pumice holds some water and the moss holds a lot of water.
The ratio of moss to pumice and the size of the pumice need to be tailored to the needs of the orchid.
It takes a bit of experimentation to get it right for each orchid's needs.
While I do not remember exactly what ratios I used for what, it seems to me that most varied between 20% to 40% moss to pumice by volume. But, NO GUARANTEES!

Roey, have you tried looking at the posts from the Yahoo group of Home Tissue Culture? Perhaps there is some information there that can help you.
Also, I have used some of Phytotechnology's pre-mixed media for other groups of plants. I don't know how their costs compare with Sigma, but worth a look.

If you sow VERY thin, protocorns can grow to maturity in the original flask. But, there will be significant waste from clumps, where protocorns/seedlings crowd each other to death.

If you flask on the kitchen counter, there will be some flasks with contamination. Once you see a mold develop in side a flask, use a magnifying glass as a lense, and concentrate sun beams on the mold. This way you can burn it away without opening the flask, and save the remainder of the flask.

Thank you very much fairorchid, but i guess I'm afraid of smashing the small protocons I'm very accurate and sensitive but in picture they look just like little guppies fish which if you hold with something beside a net will be mashed or cut. So are protocons actually more hard😊?
