Orchis mascula seed disinfection
Default Orchis mascula seed disinfection

Hello out there orchid lovers.

I would like to take your opinion (if somebody did that again), on how to disinfect/sterilize seeds from Orchis mascula (terrestrial orchid).

So to far i have two choices :

1) in a solution of 0.3% of sodium hypochloride, leave seeds for 10-15 min

2) in a solution of 5% sodium hypochloride with a drop of dish soap , leave seeds for 10-15 min.

I will do this in a lab so i will have pipettes and possibly other chemicals that will suggest.

Thank you.

Here is the instructions on how to sterilize seeds before you sow them into your media. Once you open the page scroll down till you see the Green Capsule Disinfection or the Dry Seed Disinfection.

Also at the top of the page is a chart for time of capsule to be ready. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page you will see all about replating seedlings and the correct time to do it.

Here is also a

I have no experience with terrestrial seeds. But i use a 10% solution of peroxide with a tiny drop of dish soap. I let it soak for at least 20 minutes and i only rinse the seeds with sterile water twice before sowing. I get pretty low contamination rates this way and i find the peroxide is less damaging to the seeds. My Aerides seeds that i flasked up recently had a VERY high germination rate with the peroxide but pretty low when done with bleach.

Hope this helps
