I haven't been flasking long.... and until yesterday, I wasn't even sure if I got it right. I have several seeds that have been flasked for about 2 months, now. None have shown me any signs of life, yet. Then, while inspecting them yesterday, I noticed my most recent seed had germinated. This one was split into 4 flasks on December 1st....and all 4 are germinating! From what I've seen on the registry, this is an un-registered cross....so I may get to name it! Does anyone know how old it has to be to register it? I'm preparing my re-plate medium right now! Anyway, here's pics of the babies:

I was told to re-plate as soon as they get the size of a BB (or pellet). And I'll keep you posted, Susanne.

As for registration, you have to bloom the first of the cross before you can register is, as RHS requires a photo for registration. Cold be anywhere from four to seven years.

I'm awaiting some pollen from japan for a cross I have in mind. It is unregistered, and I am hoping to develop a new direrection in minicatt breeding by incorporating a sophronitis OTHER than coccinea. Of course, try finding good quality forms of any other Sophronitis in this country....

Good luck with the cross. The results should be interesting. Be aware, the open shape and thin substance of L. purp are very strongly passed on.

Congratulation, I love colors of parents: beautiful. If there is plenty of room for seedlings and tiny seedling are growing well don't hurry to re-plate. Wait until they have 2 leaves and roots. If you re-plate many times and have a good LFH then you can re-plate whenever you want; otherwise, wait until they are strong enough so if you got contaminate when transferring to new medium you can grow them in moss.

Cj. Have you ever looked Gold Country Orchids. I think they do a lot with Sophronitis check it out. Jim.

JIm: Yes, and Alan has some very nice Soph. coccinea, but my interest is in getting some good S. wittigiana blood into the US. It is very hard to find good, tetraploid forms of anything but coccinea or the occasional bicolor or acuiensis, here. They are all in Japan or Brazil. I've found a guy who is willing to share pollen and seed and has a wonderful collection. I'm excited about the potential of bright pink sophrocattleyas. I feel like the work on reds in the minicatts has been done, and it's time to branch out into other colours, utilizing less commonly used Sophronitis and rupiculous Laelia species. I have about four generations of breeding planned out, and it would be nice if I didn't have to do five generations of line breeding necessary on the Sophronitis species I want to use. Nevermind colchicine. I really don't fancy exotic cancers. I'd like to just get my hands on some pollen or, universe willing, five or ten seedlings.

Thanks NewFlasker .. sounds good to me , I got an unflasked from Troy Myers Lab. actually a cross Orchidflower did ,equestris ,some were large some hardly germinated all did well in moss . Jasen your babies look good Gin
