If you divest yourself of identifying with the male, Al....you might get it truly is perfect.
Each species has its unique, perfectly evolved reality and timetable, but there is no arbitrary hardwiring in evolution; the more you study it, the more thrilling and humbling it emerges as being.

Edit: just followed up....the behavior in question does not pervade, but, when it does present, there are important and viable reasons for it.

More: in service of maybe fostering more clarity.....the examples of this perfection are infinite; predatory animals who are engineered perfectly to both hide from species seeking to eat them, hunt and eat prey...from the formidable big cats to the tiniest frogs, etc.
Some males animals compete for mating rights by exhausting themselves in long displays to win the approval of females who choose the males with the best genes; others fight other males, sometimes to the death, to establish THEIR health and superior genes, which they can then pass along. None of it is arbitrary.
