One wonders why they even took the time to register it..?

its not the ugly in the flower but the ability of man to manipulate nature in a way thats un-natural in every respect.

See, here's the subjective thing, cuz I think these are kind of cute, like little boxing flowers with pink gloves on!!

That 3-slippered Paph is a peloric type mutation, and apparently stable. Some people find pelorics attractive.

As I mentioned in a similar thread, Bill Thoms crossed C. velutina x E. cordigera, and he thought it so ugly he registered it as Epicatt Never Remake This.

Too bad there isn't a photo of the cross on the net (at least I couldn't find one). Personally, I find C. velutina to be downright ugly to begin with.

I've had a phal and a catt that were disappointing for their mediocrity, but nothing that was grotesque. At least that would have been interesting! There's nothing worse than a boring orchid flower.

I completely agree. The flower looks like it has varicose veins

I posted a Phrag here on the board that one member said was not an improvement to the species. I'll admit, it's not the most vibrant phrag, but I enjoy it nonetheless.

Ghastly and terrifying! A hideous, sinful abrogation.

But, your final pithy comment is a very important truth I only wish more people would own and carry around every day.

Nobody can be guilty of the pernicious tampering sin, who is connected to the humbling wonder of the evolved perfection of the natural world, be it: re the environment; energy policies; breeding animals and plants, favoring short term profits over our future re, wetlands, rain forest...just for openers.

Evolved perfection? Then how perfect is the love life of the praying mantis?

If you divest yourself of identifying with the male, Al....you might get it truly is perfect.

Each species has its unique, perfectly evolved reality and timetable, but there is no arbitrary hardwiring in evolution; the more you study it, the more thrilling and humbling it emerges as being.

Edit: just followed up....the behavior in question does not pervade, but, when it does present, there are important and viable reasons for it.
It's nothing PERSONAL.
______________________________
More: in service of maybe fostering more clarity.....the examples of this perfection are infinite; predatory animals who are engineered perfectly to both hide from species seeking to eat them, hunt and eat prey...from the formidable big cats to the tiniest frogs, etc.

Some males animals compete for mating rights by exhausting themselves in long displays to win the approval of females who choose the males with the best genes; others fight other males, sometimes to the death, to establish THEIR health and superior genes, which they can then pass along. None of it is arbitrary.
