Deflasked today.
Easy to split up because of good, solid root system. However something strange - I think - see photo. A couple of the seedlings had an extended root system, almost as if another plant was stuck to them. In fact I broke one of these "extensions" off before realising that it was part of the seedling and plenty of others had the same thing.
Anyone know what this is ? See photo.

This is it

I stuck a couple of the larger ones in a compot

Wow! That is a nice group of zygos! I just have the two zygos and the seedling was further along so I am no help. I do love the pictures as I find baby plants so cute, especially orchids (the reason I tend to buy the itty-bitty seedlings).
Good luck!

It is common for some seeds to germinate later than the main batch. It could be a second seed, that germinated later and clung to the first larger seedling.

It is OK to leave them together; they will usually separate naturally in a year or two, as the two plants grow in opposite directions.

nope, it/they are definitely not a smaller sibling. I know because I tried to separate them and that didn't work. I then got a magnifying light and could see on the others that it was part of the seedling. I had earlier separated zygopetalum triste seedlings, a lot of which were tiny so I know the difference.

Here are a further 2 photos which illustrate better. In the first photo the main growth has browned and a side shoot with roots has grown. There are also healthy roots out the other end !

Stats

Pollinated - 15 December 2011
Flasked - 17 May 2012
Deflasked - 19 February 2014

these took a LOT longer than my phals. It must be typical to zygopetalum as Z triste was similar...
