Yes, brassias can be produced this way. You will have to start with a bulb that has some live "nodes" on it. Usually brassias are so prolific there will be several there. Look for a "vee" shape, upside down near the bottom of the bulb just before the roots. That's where the new rhizome will start from.
I used to sit bulbs like this up in a clay pot, no mix, and mist them daily to get them to start new growths, then fill in a slight amount of mix only when roots started showing.
