Paphiopedilum seed media

Hello everyone,

I am about to receive a few Paphiopedilum seeds and, though I've been successful with Dens and Phals, I've never grown Paphios from seed.

Do you guys know any home-made media formula that works well with this kind of seed?.

You could ask on a Paph forum... I think SlipperTalk is one of them (Slippertalk Orchid Forum- The best slipper orchid forum for paph, phrag and other lady slipper orchid discussion! - Powered by vBulletin) just guessing, b/c I don't really grow paphs, much less flask the seeds, but I feel like someone there should know. Are you talking about seeds or you have seedling coming out of flasks?

Paphiopedilum: The entire genus is fraught with peril, and is best left to the experienced grower. Many species are extremely difficult to germinate, or requre specialized media or germination conditions. Some of the more difficult genera may be propagated using techniques adapted for cypripediums and other temperate terrestrials. Western media are formulated to successfully germinate a number of genera, and paphs do quite well on these media. Also highly recommended are media from Alan at Tissue Quick Plant Labs in the UK. The use of media with banana (such as the P668 + B852) is apparently contraindicated with paphs; the use of coconut as an undefined component when mixing W2.5 and W3 is suggested over banana or pineapple. They do not appear to be nearly as fussy about replate media as they are with germination media.

Last year I had some seeds of Paphiopedilum fowliei and I used medium with the composition (mg per L):

Germination was low, but some (5-10%?) seeds became to protocorm and after a few weeks died.
Maybe immediately after germination they must by replate to another fresh media?

Hi, I use p668 at 50%, for sowing and first reflask and then add banana for second reflas. My protocorms died when firts reflask was made in media containing banana.
