New Spike Broken Off-- will it regrow?
Default New Spike Broken Off-- will it regrow?

My phal was finally growing a new spike after months of waiting, so I showed it to a friend. Tragically, he picked up the plant and dropped it, entirely breaking off the new 2- or 3-inch spike at the base of the plant.

Is there a chance that it will grow back? Or will I have to wait until next year for a new spike?

Can anything be done with the spike that broke off? It seems undamaged, apart from being separated from the plant. If I leave it in water, will anything happen?

I attached a photo of the base of the plant, you can see where the spike broke off, there's a sort of hollowed out circle thing.

I once broke off a still very small Phal spike, not too long afterwards THREE new spikes started from the same leaf axis! This may be unusual but it shows it is possible (likely depends on the individual plant's genetics) . It may also start a spike from another spot.

Happened to me before. Don't beat yourself up. Another spike will form for sure. When I could not say but don't give up

It happened a couple of times to me too! Chances are that a new spike will grow from the bottom most leaf axis on the right. A lot of Phals have spikes around this time of year, so hopefully you'll get another one soon!

Thanks for the reassurance. Hopefully I'll get a new spike soon, and not next season!
