New to Catasetinea

Hi all, as some of you are aware that i received a catasetum from a friend. Well i don't know what to do with. It's already middle of September and i don't know if i should pot and water it or just leave it as bare- root the roots are all dried up. Can i mix medium bark and charcoal as its potting media? The temperature here in Switzerland cannot be relied on. It can get rather cool in the evening.



Currently it's sitting in a glass inside a plastic bottle filled with water that i cut into half hoping that it will provide some humidity for this plant. It's pseudobulb is rather shrivel comparing to some picture i see on the net. I don't know what i can do with it




Would be great if someone help me out with it, as i don't want it to die in my hand...

I don't kn ow if you orchid is a good S/H candidate. I know that these two websites do identify orchids that will/will not work in S/H.

I saw that it has a small nubbin growth coming out from the base....your instinct is right....just give it humidity but do not water it until the small growth have reached 3 inches or if the roots have reached three inches....your plant is experiencing its annual dry rest period....the old roots of the old cane will just wither and die but the new roots have to establish in a manner that is according to the Catasetinae culture.
if the cane wrinkles a bit you can sprinkle it with water....otherwise the strength of the new root system and the flowering will depend on the dry rest you give the plant....
