Dividing Orchids
Default Dividing Orchids

I will have to divide my orchids shortly as they are growing out of their pots. I have heard that once I divide them it will take several years before they bloom. Is this info correct? Thank you:

what kind of orchids do you need to divide?

sometimes it is better to just repot it undivided in a bigger container to give you more blooms to enjoy...unless you want to sell the divisions to make them earn their keep

I think that if each division consists of at least 2 old growths and a new one, they should not miss a beat.

It really depends on the size of the division and the species. As long as there is enough root mass on both divisions then as Ray said they will not miss a beat. If they lack roots then it may take a year or two to bounce back, just because the plant will be using it's energy into growing and not flowering.

Personally I don't divide unless I don't have a pot big enough to pot into, or somebody wants a piece.
