is it ok for flasking medium?
Hi all,
I made my first flasking medium yesterday, it more like water instead of jello, I used 1 liter water, 7g agar agar, 25g honey, 300g potato, and half banada, anything wrong?
I steriled medium by microwave, oven and PC, it seems the water enter food jar in PC.
thanks.

I've never used honey before. That's the right amount of agar. I'd be worried about the micronutrients. Were you able to test the pH? That will affect germination.
You might also want to consider buying the premade media powder. Its really cheap. Maybe cheaper then your homemade mix.
What are you trying to grow?

thanks for your quick reply, I didn't test the PH value, I put very tiny vinegar to lower the PH, I lived in Canada, I don't know where to buy the premade media powder.
since it's my first try, I just want to try my phal.

Sorry but in your formula, I do not see any source of nitrogen and other macro-elements.
Are you sure this works?
Furthermore, according to some studies, the concomitant use of potato and other carbon sources (honey or otherwise fructose and / or sucrose) slow growth considerably.

Watery media sometimes results from cooling too slowly after autoclaving/pressure cooking. Don't leave the flasks in the pressure cooker until it cools right down... take them out when they are just cooled enough to touch.

I also made my own medium for the first time recently. I used about 900ml of water with 6g agar and mine set OK, so there is nothing wrong with the amount of agar you used.
Did you actually sterilise using all three methods? Microwave, oven, and PC? Perhaps the reheating of the medium has contributed to it being watery? I had never used agar before, but I have made many jellies, jams, and sweets before and they don't set as nicely if they are reheated. Does anyone else reheat their medium?

I found the reason
After I changed to another agar, I got the jelly, it's not related to heat, PH or others.
thanks everyone.
