Phal with 2 seed pods, but now growing a flower??
Default Phal with 2 seed pods, but now growing a flower??

Hey wondering if anyone knows whether this is a good or a bad sign?
I managed to pollinate 2 flowers on a phal with a different phal (the pollination didn't work on that phal ) and the 2 seed pods have developed over the past 4 months. However i noticed a new flower bud on one of the spikes, and now the seed pod on that spike seems to be shrinking is this a sign that that pod hasn't got seed? or are both not got seed and thats why the phal has energy to put into a new flower bulb, have also noticed some new roots too.

Leanne - On average a Phalaenopsis seed pod will take 110 - 120 days to mature. The pod that you said went bad most likely had just ripened.

If you plan on flasking the seed from this pod I would suggest you go ahead and do it.

That is way too cool! I guess if you managed to pollinate a flower...then you might as well learn how to flask...
Thanks for posting this. Now I know that while waiting for the pod to ripen; the spike can still manage to bloom again...
@Glen: so its that long a time to ripen a pod...my Polystachya paniculata has two pods as of last month...and its blooming on another spike...I guess I have to cram and fastly learn how to flask...

oooo okay then, so me looking at pressure cookers earlier and umming about whether to buy one just yet, has been given the go ahead! lol Will do a refresher in how to flask and start getting things ready this weekend. This will be my first time!

I just wasn't sure if they'd be ready yet.. it does seem to vary on how long, so was waiting for signs like browning and splitting, but so far it just seems to be withering and on closer inspection, maybe going lighter too.
Thanks!

Bud - Maturation times for seed pods can vary greatly from genus to genus and also from species to species in the same genus. Paphs, as an example can take from 240 - 300 dayto mature.

yup it was ripe, i noticed it went more yellow and then split slightly, so i picked it off and put it in a sandwich bag. it opened some more so i split it open to get a look for seeds through the bag... and there was no seeds, just the fluff stuff

still got one more pod which is still green and bigger, so fingers crossed, that one will contain seeds. was hoping to have both so could experiment and see what works. I've got 3 other phals spiking again so will try again.
