Default I'm BAAACK! :D Cym. Backbulb question.

It's been a while since I've been on here. But, I bought my first Cym. a few months ago and absolutely fell head over heels in love with it... So naturally bought some back bulbs with sprouts shortly afterwards. I repotted the 1-4 year old sprouts, and some weren't attached to the large back bulbs. Sooo, should I try to get more sprouts out of them? And what (in your opinion) is the best way?

Thanks everyone!

and p.s. I've missed you!

HI! It's been a while! And that's okay. I just potted them up. I read that it could take up to a year to see any growth, if there's any growth at all. It's worth a try though.

good to see you here again!

I've sprouted cym backbulbs, but don't know about sprouts that aren't attached ... guess it doesn't hurt to try - let us know how it goes!

It was really interesting. They are giant bulbs, and it looked like the sprouts, which I guess wouldn't be called that anymore. More like Juvenile plants weren't attached to the back bulb. They're doing really well though! So I'm guessing it's natural?

Aww I missed you too! I've been MIA trying to keep busy while my husband's deployed... again. But it's almost over now. And he seems to be encouraging my orchid fix.

Hi Mary, glad to see you over here again. There is a good link here about backbulbs and what to do with them. I've never tried it myself but I've read through this and it looks like good info.

If there are roots on the new growths, they will continue to grow and eventually send out another growth. It will usually take longer without the support of the BB but it will survive. Just do not put it in too large a pot.

In regard to the BB, stand it upright in a zip lok quart freezer bag with about a cup of your usual moistened mix. Add a tag and seal. Place in a warm, well lit place and be patient. If the BB decides to send up another growth, it will come from higher up the BB than the last and will not be as strong. Fun to try, however, but do not be surprised if nothing happens.
