I broke off some old Dendrobium canes and put into fir bark and charcoal mix.

How long does it take to root and send out new growth?

I did this to two of my dendrobiums and it took about 2 or 3 months for them to start growing buds off of them and a long time for them to be big enough to repot. I saw that you posted this in April 2011 and no one responded to it. Did you get any seedlings off of the canes?

They won't typically put out keiki's if you just put them into some potting mix. What I will do is take some sphagnum moss and put it into a ziplock bag then put the cut up canes into it. Usually in about a few weeks they will produce keiki's and then i will plant them into a small pot with sphag. it will take about 4 years to flower from that point.

I personally have never had success with this method on dens. I have however propagated Phaius from old flower spikes cut into 1 ft sections and placed on a bed of damn perlite.

You said Phaius?

I'm trying to get a Phaius tankervilleae here in Europe for a year but nobody sells it. It was a very fashionable plant here but nowadays they disappeared.

Correct. If you cut the spikes after they are done flowering but before they start to yellow and die and lay them on a bed of damp perlite/sand/sphagnum they will produce keiki's from the non flowering nodes. It takes some time and is by no means 100% fool proof, but I does work, I was able to get 7 keikis of my tankervillae when I tried it.
