Default Can anything be done with this Dend cane?

Bad kitty! Knocked over one of my Dends and broke off this cane. As you can see from the pic, I've had it stuck in moist sphagnum moss for a few weeks, but other than keep the end of the spike green, nothing has happened. I figured I must be going about this wrong so I pulled it out.

I've read something about slicing and dicing and laying out on wet moss, but I'd like some more detail on that process - or any other - that might enable me to get some keikis off of this, or resurrect this cane in some way.

Thanks!

Hi Ray,

I don't know about the other process about slicing and dicing it to get keikis, but I did have something similar happen to me (my own butterfingers during repotting and not a bad kitty).

Here's what I did:
- Removed the sheath / dried layer over the cane, disinfected with rubbing alcohol on cottonball just in case.
- Wrapped it in a paper towel moistened with rooting hormone solution (as recommended dilution on bottle).
- Put it in a tuberware container with a few holes in it for some air circulation to prevent mold.
- Placed container over seedling mat for increased warmth (as I live in NJ and it's still cold) to encourage growth.
- Unwrap the paper towel and let it breathe for a few minutes each day so it can get some air and avoid mold.

My dendrobium cane showed signs of new growth in a week's time and turned out to be a keiki. Hope this helps!

Susan
