Kelo,
I have no problem with people crossing whatever they want. My only concern is that, when I see people on various forums crossing whatever is in flower or flasking open pollinated hybrids, in 3 years time they'll be flogging their precious (but pobably not very good) seedlings off to other people. We already have the pro's selling off bad show breeding as pot plant breeding without us amateurs getting in on the game
. On the other hand, commercial breeders are so focused on making a buck these days that I think we're increasingly going to have to look to backyarders for the more interesting/riskier crosses that the commercial growers can't afford to do.
Try a few crosses. You can get some idea of which crosses won't work by which crosses have already been done but you can't learn how to breed without crossing them yourself. At some stage though, you'll figure out that you need to think about what/how you're breeding so it's better to have that mind set from the get go. Yes you'll produce some junk; everyone does. Even the pro's make bad crosses - buy enough of their seedlings and you'll realise they're not perfect either. If you use good parents and produce junk, you've learnt something about how to use good parents for next time. If you use two average parents and produce similarly average seedlings you'll just confirm that you need to use good parents to start with.

Oh, there are
. Labs will usually make you commit to a minimum number of seedlings/flasks. If you have lets say 100 seedlings, you'll end up culling a lot of them before they reach flowering size and even if you bloom 20-40 of them you probably won't want to keep all of them.
