This is so cool! Makes me wonder what is going on with all those "dead" dends I threw away years ago? Probably blooming in some desolate landfill somewhere! Darn!

Hi Jerry
I have a Nobile Den. Oriental Smile 'Fantasy' that i just took one of the old stems and cut into sections with 3 joints each . I put them on top of sphagnum moss and it's been 2 months now and they are starting to sprout it does work with the standard Den. also , just make sure after you cut the stem you let the ends callous before you lay them on moss . Before I had a greenhouse I would put the stems in a ziploc bag with a small clump of moss that I would wet then squeeze out excess moisture keep in good light no direct sun. Don't worry that you don't have many orchids that changes fast ,if you find a orchid society near you join if they are like the 2 I belong to you'll get some nice divisions . Good Luck

Hi Roc

I just removed a 4 ft cane from a monster Den I have and was going to dump it...then remembered this thread!

When you say "let the ends callous"...does that mean just let them sit and dry a bit or should I actually do "something" to accomplish that before setting them on some moss?

Hi Sue

Yes , I let them get a scab to seal ends or if you want you could maybe wax ends , it helps the stem keep from rotting . It takes a little while for them to sprout but it works . Hope this helps .

Thanks Roc
I've put them to the side where they won't get wet and I'll wait before I lay them on the sphag.

Should they be in light or shade?

Hi Sue

They can still be in good light just keep from direct Sun . I put mine on bottom tier of bench in Greenhouse until they start to grow.

That's amazing mel! Maybe its a self-defense mechanism or something.

So let me get this right, For an old Nobile-type cane, you cut it off, break it into pieces with about three nodes each, but there's differences with what to do next: I leave them in...

a) a dry place open to the atmosphere like on a windowsill
b) a dampish place like in a greenhouse
c) a zip-lock bag with a little wet cottonball or sphag moss
d) a pot wrapped up in a little sphag moss.

or can i like run it over with a truck and it will shoot roots?
