Default Orchid Flaskers in Saskatchewan?

Hi, I was wondering if any one does or knows someone who does orchid flasking in Saskatchewan. I currently have a noid phal that I self crossed because I liked the flowers SOO much, and was planning on just sprinkling the seeds around the mother plant, but if I could get it flasked, it would be much better. I am willing to let the flasker keep all the seedlings, so long as I get a few! I live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Hi Carbuncle,

Since you haven't received an answer yet I'll chime in. First, it's great to have you here. The hobby of growing orchids needs more young blood. I'm in my thirties and am often the youngest one in the room at shows and society events! I'm fine with it, but the more the merrier!

Most commercial labs will charge you, but it is likely that any hobbyist that can sow seed for you probably wouldn't be interested in a NOID. I don't mean to sound rough, I just don't think that would be an enticing deal to a hard core hobbyist. I may be wrong, though.

If you can send seed to a commercial lab, you can send it anywhere in Canada or the US. But you may need to expand your search area beyond Saskatchewan. It's not that common of a skill.

All that being said, here's a thought to consider: Why don't you learn to do it yourself? You obviously have a thirst for knowledge (because you're here) and you have LOTS of time to perfect it! It's never too early to start your own breeding lines. The actual process isn't that complicated as long as you take certain important steps. What do you think?

Well, first off, the Noid cross was a bust..... but now I am really obsessed with Brassavola nodosa, and as soon as I buy one, I want to start breeding with that. The only problem with sowing my own seeds is money! If I had money, I would buy the supplies needed.......WELL, after I had bought a TON of new orchids! Though I do agree that sowing my own seeds sounds neat, I am kinda frightened by the idea! ! Well, as far as it goes right now, I found out that a member of our Orchid Soceity flasks! Well, thanks for you input, and maybe, in a couple of years a you might see an orchid with my name on it!

A couple of things you should know. Seed crosses are NOT color consistent. Your NoID with a flower you like would not necessarily produce the same flower.

Look at these examples of a Cattleya
Color variations in seed grown orchids

For examples of Phals look under the Phalaenopsis gallery and find the 8 different colors of Phal Elizabeth Hayden. These were seed sib crosses.

For a single flask of nodosa you can buy them from Troy Meyers. Flasks can be shipped internationally although I do not know if he does it as it is a species. Contact him. Flask and Established Seedling Sales, and Flasking Programs
