When to seperate vanda slips... Male
Default When to seperate vanda slips...

I have a huge vanda that has 2 slips which I have had for over a year now. I didn't remove the slips because they didn't have roots yet and someone told me to wait. The mother plant has recently lost all of its leaves and the two slips are as large as the mother plant. They recently started popping out roots. How do I know when it is time to seperate them? The mother plant roots have grown tremendously since it lost it's leaves. Will it continue to grow without leaves if I remove the slips?

The slips are keikis. As far as when to remove them, not until they have produced a good root system of their own. Can you post any pictures and how large it the mother plant?

A picture would help, but if mother plant lost all her leaves she's probably a goner. Keikis can be risky to remove if they present themselves very low on mother's stem. Without a photo for reference (don't know how your growing your plant) I'd leave the keikis alone until they produce a few 3 to 4 inch roots. Then I'd cut off the leafless top of the mother plant and let the keikis take over.
