When to seperate vanda slips...

I have a huge vanda that has 2 slips which I have had for over a year now. I didn't remove the slips because they didn't have roots yet and someone told me to wait. The mother plant has recently lost all of its leaves and the two slips are as large as the mother plant. They recently started popping out roots. How do I know when it is time to seperate them? The mother plant roots have grown tremendously since it lost it's leaves. Will it continue to grow without leaves if I remove the slips?
