I just received a couple of bare root Stanhopeas. They came in Zip Lock bags with damp sphagnum and I plan to pot them up in some net baskets.

Since they seem dormant, is there anything I should do with them first? Would soaking them in a KLN or Superthrive solution be beneficial? Should I wait until I see new grow before potting them?

Thanks in advance,

Bill in Nokomis, FL

What species are they? I would pot them right away and I think at this time of the year you can just water them as normal (which is a lot!) and fertilize them as normal (which is also a lot!). As for the KLN or Superthrive, I've never used them and have had great success so if you don't already own them, I wouldn't spend the money.

Hello Bill.
Before writing, I have googled "NOKOMIS, FL" and found that your place is located at sea level. Probably nice weather there for many Homo sapiens but definitely not for any Stanhopea hernandezii.
Sorry to tell you, but you cannot grow S. hernandezii at sea level ... because it's genetics have evolved in Mexico at some 5000 ft.
I suggest that you try to exchange your S. hernandezii for something that better suits your climate.
Regards,
MANFRED.
