Sure you can, and i think in the right environment they thrive on mounts, both hybrids and species. I would put a little moss around the base of the crown, where new roots come out, as it protects the new roots from dessication while they emerge. If your humidity is good enough, they'll ignore the sphag eventually and crawl everywhere.

I'd use tree fern mounts preferentially as they hold more moisture and the roots can bury into the fibres, but cork works too if you can keep the water up.

But one word of warning, don't be afraid to water them well.. if they've grown up used to pot culture, especially sphagnum moss, the roots will prefer a wet environment and will require more watering than normal once mounted. In Melbourne where humidity isn't great, i'd water twice a day if possible, or even hook up a constant drip system, or an automated spray system or something. Rot is just about impossible if they're mounted.

If you have the time to give them the water they'll need (and they really will need it), go for it.

Hey, thanks for the info, for now I put my compot Phals into pots.. In a couple of weeks I'm repot a couple of them. I have a 12 inch square piece of fir bark, 1 1/2 inch thick. Can I cut this bark? If so, say the Phal has 10 in. leafspan and several long pretty roots what size should I make mount? Thanks for your help!!!!!!! Pam
