Try e-bay. I got a very good laminar flow hood that was discarded by the U of Miami medical school for $850. It probably cost 10x that new.

Unfortunately the first bid I got on freight to get it here was $1200, but the seller put me on a website called freightclick that specializes in buying up unused truck space. I ended up with a $200 freight bill.

There is an e-bay seller in south Florida who specializes in supplus medical equipment.

Sometimes you can find them used from industry and universities.

I have an eBay searched saved and it only lists ones that are within 250 miles of my location. I could pick that up.

Good luck. This is so much easier with a hood.

Eric it's like everything on e-bay, a big risk. I looked at the pictures and the sellers feedback. The seller I used does a ton of e-bay selling of pretty expensive medical equipment to commercial customers and had a great reputation.

He helped me a lot with the freight and didn't really have to because someone else was bidding also.

Don't forget, you will also need a sterilizer. I decided to buy that new because used ones did not seem too good to me. I bought an new All American for about $600 direct from them. AA is the Cadillac of canning equipment so I figured it would be good and it is. There are some cheaper ones (new) on e-bay but I couldn't find out anything useful about them.

I bought some new and used lab glassware. The e-bay stuff wasn't all great but was cheap, cheap so it didn't matter.

Scalpels, spatulas, masks, rubber gloves, head covers all that kind of stuff is pretty cheap.

I recommend the book Asymbiotic Technique of Orchid Seed Germination by Aaron J. Hicks. It will save you a lot of mistakes and has some suggestions that you might not think of. I'd buy the book first and see if you really think this is for you. It's not rocket science, but unless you have exposure to lab techniques there is a lot to learn. The book was available from PhytoTech the last time I looked. Aaron was sold out.

The reason I suggest the book is that I spent about $4000 to get started and all this stuff takes up space and the flasks consume a lot of space. I'm lucky that I have a 1200 sq ft heated and air conditioned shop building. My flasking operation currently takes up about 500 sq ft. Read the book first.

I have the book and have done a little flasking at a friends lab at central state. seem that most of all you need a good flow hood and keep every thing steril . But finding a person or company is a bitch that sells a home use one . Most wont give you a price or even shipping.

Eric, you should be able to find a laminar flow hood from a number of sources. You didn't state if you were looking for used or new. If you Google "used laminar flow hoods" you will get well in excess of 40,000 hits. Even if only a fraction of these hit pay dirt, you should have a number of choices. It appears that you are in the Midwest. I would look for a company called Aaron equipment or Universal Equipment Company. I have dealt with both in the past and both are (or were in my day) good companies to work with.
If ne means that you are in Nebraska, you might try and see if the U of Neb Medical School might have some surplus hoods.
A word of caution on purchasing ANY laminar flow hood. In my opinion, you will want to purchase a horizontal hood instead of a vertical hood. They both accomplish the same thing, but I always found it much easier to train people to use the horizontal hoods vs the vertical ones.
Another BIG question you should ask is why the hood is for sale. If the HEPA is shot, you can be looking at some serious bucks to replace it with good HEPAs. If they claim the hood is A OK, ask if they are willing to provide the results of the last DOP test run on the unit (or what ever they are using now). Many hoods can have limited damage to the HEPA or inadequate seal around the perimeter of the cabinet that can cause you a lot of grief and head aches. Unless you are going into flasking in a MAJOR way, I would not recommend you purchase one larger than 4 - 6 ft wide.
Good luck with your search Eric.

I have to agree. I kind of would like a vertical hood because mine is in my basement and usually you can close them up. Lots of dust, mold, and sometimes critters in a basement. However, I think they are a pain to work in. Go with horizontal.

I would also, if you can afford it, don't get one less than 3' if you plan on doing lots of work. Mine is 3' and even with the little I do, it can get tight. You just don't have elbow room in anything smaller. They work just as good though.
