Mine is an old decrepit piece of junk, but it works and I keep things sterile. It doesn't have to be pretty, just sterile.

The essence in a nut shell, Ben. It's the results that count. Oh, by the way, yours is a Cadillac compared to some I have had to use in industry. I can remember when these first started coming out, there was a real flux of them on the market starting at just a few hundred dollars to just under 20K. Irony was at that time there were only about three manufacturers of HEPA filters (and two of them weren't much good)! The cabinet was the only real difference!

My glove box does the trick. Of course a flow hood would be optimal, but my home-made glove box cost less than 10 bucks. If it works, it works.

No, the fume hood would draw unfiltered (contaminated) air across what you are working on. A laminar flow hood pushes submicron-filtered air across your work area to prevent contaminants from getting onto what you are working on.

Here are some inexpensive laminar flow air filtration units. They don't actually have the hood component, just the laminar flow setup, you would construct your own hood or even use it without a hood.
