Spathoglottis x Phaius - Green pod time? Male
Default Spathoglottis x Phaius - Green pod time?

Hi

I am about to flask some pods of a yellow Spathoglottis hybrid with what I think is a semi-alba of Phaius Tankervillae. The Spathoglottis is the pod parent. It is now at 40 days.

I have read green pod time for Spathoglottis in hot weather is 45 days, 55 in cold. Well in Bangkok there is only hot

As this is an intergeneric hybrid, will it make any difference to picking time? I am noticing some rose/red colour beginning slowly in the base area of the pods. I'd like some opinions on this as it is my first hybrid and I want to get it right.

I have 3 pods. I had a fourth pod, but it seemed to not grow as robustly as the others and split today with some, but little seed.

Brett

If one has split, the others are probably ok to sow as "green pods".

Hi

I took one pod over to the lab and it is flasked. I was pushing the lab 2 days later to report the embryo count (got confusion from the staff on that one). They said they were not sure that the seed would be good as "it was old"..... Alai wa? was my thought in Thai You can guess what that means.

Before I could get the other pods in that day, they decided to split. I decided to see how the pod I took in green goes, rather than throw good money after bad. I can always repeat the cross later.

The lab tried to tell me that Thai growers harvest spathoglottis pods at 20 days or less, and that they though I had left it too long. I kind of doubt this information. I trust the information above "from a spathoglottis breeder" that the green pod time is 45 to 55 days and though he had done it at 30, it was not really advisable.

The lab was probably just giving me an answer to the question, when they really had no idea. It happens. I just hate the run around and poor information.
