legal propagation
I'm new to the forum....but not to tissue culture. I am looking to TC some of the plants I have in my house. At work we search the US plant patents for patent #'s by name and plant type...like....'heritage and raspberry"
However.....when i do this for orchids....i don't seem to come up with anything.....
Is there someplace that has a search for protected varieties? Or....can anyone propagate as much as they want for any orchid?
Second part to this post......
I found some recipes for orchid media for agar. None of them have hormones. Can someone point me to a recipe for multiplication media for orchids? And....Can someone help me find a diagram on where to find the "parts" necessary for TC?

Assuming that american Plant Patents fonction the same way as International Plant Breeders Rights(PBR), inidividuals may propagate these protected plants, providing that they are for your personal use and you do not offer them for sale. In the case that you plan to sell them, you would have to pay royalties to the original breeder. As I said, I am only cetain of this for PBR.
I do know that there is PBR database, but don't know about a database for Plant Patents.
I still don't understand why the usa is so obstinate in using it's own patent system rather than the international PBR system. Breeders have to register the same plant twice if they want complete protection!

I'll have to look it up, the website link is somewhere in one of the lectures I had in my plant breeding course. At least I think there is a database. Now that I think of it, the lecturers showed us so many different things that I may be mistaken. Unfortunately I have class right now, so I'll try to look it up later this afternoon. I'll let you know if I find anything.

To answer your media question, you can use whatever media you want (I order mine from Phytotech...it's easier). For multiplication, just add coconut milk to the media......the more you add, the more they will multiply. They will keep multiplying, as long as they are in the media.

Keep an eye on your PH, it may change if you add a lot.

If you're looking to clone cattleyas, there may be some better media out there. MURASHIGE CATTLEYA ORCHID MULTIPLICATION MEDIUM - Orchid Culture - M507 But if you are working with Phals, a standard germination/maint media with coconut added should do.
The big difference will be where you get the explant tissue from. Good meristem tissue is found in different places depending on the genus. For Phals you'll want to use dormant buds on a spike. For Cats you'll want a newly swelling "eye" or new shoot. Some other genera may differ and some may not want to be cloned at all. Good Luck!

So, I was right, there is a database, but you can't access it for free, you need to buy it. BUT you can get a free trial copy. There's over 300 000 varieties listed. Don't know what it's like, I don't have access to it.

I'll tell you why the usa thinks it needs it's own version of everything, Camille. It's because we have this stupid, arrogant notion that we're better than the rest of the world and everyone should change their ways to match ours, not the other way around.
And people wonder why we don't have good international relations?....
I swear, we're practically one invasion force away from trying to take over the world so that everyone will comply with our way of life and forget their "silly" foreign ways.
Hehe, sorry, I see an opening like that and I just have to rant a little.
