Dendrobium Orchid What should I do.. HELP !!!!!!!

Hello,

I bought this Dendrobium Orchid at Lowes, it wasn't looking to good and it was on discount, my heart went out to it, I broke it home and replanted it and I watered it really good then I transplanted it.. Looks like its till alive the stock or canes ??? not sure what they are really called I never grew a orchid before.... not alone know what kind they were..... I know the stock is still looking green and the leaves are in good shape so I figured the thing was still alive...... I been watering it once a week letting it dry out between waters... Just wanted to see what you all thought what the thoughts of this thing was, and what it looks like... .Does it have hope for regrowth and possible blooming... the bottom stocks or canes where small when i got it... looks like there getting bigger and they are green.. but the tips are brown..... hmmmm any thoughts would be great... should i keep watering it once a week and just let it go ?? or should i cover it with a bag and water it once a week.... ??????????????? Also.. should i get some fertilizer and do that once a month .. ? Does it have hope ?????????

I'm not a Dendro person, but you have that planted in garden soil! No wonder it's not doing so well. Most orchids need highly draining medium like crushed bark or fern mix. I'm sure there will be other Dendro persons here with specific help. But the mix appears all wrong to me.

As I suggested in your other post, this has been planted in garden soil. Dendros (not my specialty) need a more open mix like fir bark or tree fern.

First things first... Welcome to the OB! you'll find it to be the best site around when it comes to orchids (8K+ members! )

Now about your Dend... is it potted in soil?

This is what I would do, repot in fine bark let the canes sit on top of the media, let it REALLY dry out in between waterings, and fertilize if you see active growth.

Don't freak out if the canes go leaf-less, they do that from time to time, they'll come back

In order for them to rebloom, give it a good amount of indirect light.

For Dendrobium potting mediums, they seem to be the orchid genus that responds best to 1/2" gravel, for me at least.

Word of advice: Treat it with benign neglect and it will do wonderfully.

Your plant looks healthy. Whatever you do, don't remove the old leafless canes until they are completely shriveled and yellow. Even though they're leafless, they an important source of energy for the plant.

About the potting media...don't use potting soil. The potting media should allow the roots to dry between waterings. There's many choices of media to choose from and each grower has their own preference. Last spring I repotted my phals in med. sized chunks of coconut husk mixed with some charcoal and the plants took to it very well.
