Just flasked for the 1st time now what do I do?
Default Just flasked for the 1st time now what do I do?

Hi all....

I'm one of the "newbies" here and have just completed my 1st flasking attempt. I've researched for months and months and THINK I did it all right but what I didn't research was exactly how to store the flasks. I flasked on Saturday and know I need to set them up under some lights but from what I read, they don't need much (they're dends). Help and thanks!

Indirect light, like from a north facing window would be fine. Just a regular fluorescent strip would be fine too, plus a light will add a little heat that may help. Seedlings should be given the same temperature swing from day to night that the adults require, but overall temps should be 5-10 degrees warmer than adults.

They don't need much, I've seen some people grow them right next to a window. However, if you really want nice plants, I would suggest some horticultural T5 lights...setup in a nice cool closet, or something. They have a much better spectrum for plants, and they aren't very hot. Here's some pics of my setup....I keep the un-germinated flasks up top (under the cheap flourescent), and as soon as I see signs of germination (if they germinate), they go under the T5's. Germination rate will vary, you'll get some that will germinate 100%, and some that will only have a couple plants, and sometimes none at all.

Hey Kitty, Sorry for jacking this thread. Looks like you're getting good info. Indirect is fine for germination. After that, increase it a bit. Just be careful of direct sunlight. It will make a little greenhouse and cook the contents.

Thanks Royal....sometimes jacking is a good thing...keeps the post current. Ok so when you say "indirect" exactly how indirect? I don't have a window sill...only sliding glass doors....on a table near the window?
