You will need a gelling agent. My previous post was just to clarify that agar only serves to solidify the media. The the media itself is much more important. Sorry to confuse things.

Agar is cheap, natural, and readily available. I just make sure that I buy media with the agar included. You can buy it separate (which allows you to make the media softer if you wish).
