Hi Jkelee,

That is sooooo cool for you and your neighbor to discover the little bellies (I just luv this term) on her dendrob!

Rather than explain what you need to know here, I'll just post a link to a page on Ruben in Orchids website that explains it all for you, including pod harvesting times, flasking information and more. There is a link at the bottom of this page that will take you to his home page if you need to contact him.

Of course you could try flasking yourself of find a lab closer to your location, but you can mail the pods to him when they are ripe but still green. I have been using his services for my Vanda hybrids, and have been getting good results.

Good luck with whatever you do...and be patient...it takes a long time to bloom chids from seed.

Home flasking is not a simple process and I would recommend you do some research on the net and read up on the extensive processes involded doing home flasking before making any decisions or investments. If after your initial research you decide to do it your self rather than send the seed to a lab I would start out doing more research on home orchid flasking. This is to learn what process and procedures you wantto try first to expieriment with. 1 great resource is OSP (Orchid Seedbank Project) but there are hundreds out there; as I have many bookmarked for my use

You have some time yet to decide if you want to persue this or not as most Dendrobuim hybrid type seeds take at least 4 months to mature (give or take a month or so)

Good luck

Cool pictures. They look like they've been on there a while.

Tom's right, lots of good info if you just do a google search. OSP is a great place to start. Also try Lotte and Thomas. Since you have a few capsules to work with, I'd recommend perusing several options. You could probably let one split, then divide it and send a few packets to OB members to flask it for free. Just a thought.

Though it is involved, it's totally do-able. Just do a little research first. You may want to peruse the Propagation threads here. There are many techniques, styles, and preferences. Once you learn the lingo, you can start to sift through what is imperative, and what is just stylistic.
