Deflasked Vandas and medium ?s
I probably screwed this one up big time, but I deflasked some Vandas back in Sept. of either 2005 or 2006. Out of the 15 or so i started with I now have 4 very hardy ones. I tossed any sad looking ones. Anyway, I was just wondering if they should be in some medium or something else. I have had them in a fine bark/charcoal/perlite/tiny bit of spag mix and they seem OK. I just think they seem very small though considering they are 2-3 years old. My other vandas are all bare root. Should I move the seedlings (or whatever they are now called) to hanging baskets, or something else? I don't care about the space, I just want to give them the best. Thanks!

Jenn, I have about 8-10 Vanda babies, no bigger than 2-3" tall in pure sphag, hanging in the Shade Hotel. And they are growing great!! I see new roots all the time with them!! I've never used anything with those babies, but sphag, and all's been well! Oh, and I have all of them in hanging baskets too.

Jackie, it looks like we are chasing each other around the board! i just posed after you on the snake medium post! HAHA....
Yeah, i am thinking I need to change over to some sort of baskets, probably the vanda baskets. I think spag would be good because it could dry out fast in those baskets.

Yes, picutres please Jackie. I don't remember seeing any Vanda seedlings. It was hard to tell though since you have a greenhouse full of seedlings!

Jenn, I sent them to your Home email on this Past Thursday.
But for others, here's the story I told her in the email...
I have pics of ALL my Vanda's here from babies to Big, just the close ups of the baskets/sphag/roots.
Just to show that mine LOVE Sphag!! Growing Roots like Crazy!!
Hey, here's pics of my Vanda's in Sphag, and I mean All my Vanda's!!
I didn't even realize that I have every small, every medium and even every Large Vanda's in sphag!!
And they are all doing soooo great!! And I water them daily too, if it hasn't rained!! They dry out by the time I'm home!! You can see the healthy roots on the larger ones!!
I'm telling ya, when I had all of these in the GH, they had NO SPHAG on them! And NO ROOTS were in site either!! So after moving them to the Chid Hotel, I thought I'd try sphag in all the big ones too!! And Yahooooo, ROOTS GALORE!!!
Even blooms finally from them!!! I've had one of my old Vanda's bloom 3 times so far this yr, currently on 3rd!!
So anyhow, Sphag works for me!!

Thanks for that Jackie. I think I'll now go out and get some baskets and moss; I think my baby vanda's would do better than in the bark/perlite mix they're currently in.
