OK, I have to answer the "why bother?" question too.
For me, growing orchids is about the process. Nurturing a seedling into a healthy plant, or figuring the bloom trigger on a particularly tricky orchid is very satisfying to me. We all want to learn, that's why we are here. Sometimes we learn the hard way, sometimes (with the OB) we can learn from each other's mistakes.
You could ask why bother from seed to bloom, but you'd have missed out on the experience. I'm still relatively new, so I may grow out of this phase as I realize I have less and less time to grow orchids with every day that passes. But the more I learn, the more info I crave. Maybe it's just me?
