Swamprat, What do you mean "split in half", are you referring to the plant or the seed capsule?
The flower wilts as a pollintation response. Kind of saying "I'm already pollinated, no more visitors please". The petals and sepals will kind of close, and then dry. The pedicel contains the ovary that will swell and develop a seed capsule if everything works out right.
Royal, I think swamprat means split the plant in half, not the seed pod.
If the Phal has multiple growths with their own roots to support it, I would assume you could separate those multiple growths from the main plant. I haven't seen multiple growths on Phals happen very often unless the main plant is dying, but I haven't been growing that long either. Also if the Phal puts out a keiki you could seperate it from the mother plant as well when it has enough roots to support itself.
Sorry I wasn't clear about "splitting" the plant...I meant split the whole plant in half...at work some plant get really big and start to grown into other plants, we then cut the plant in half and usually replant one half some where else on the property. Usually we do this to plants that grow horrizonally rather than vertically. The plant becomes somewhat avassive and we prevent than.
My Phal seems to grow up rather than out...this is why splitting the plant in half didn't sound right to me
