Flasking Service
I’m working on flasking and putting out a call to members from the lower 48 for capsules and or seed. Would prefer capsules from known crosses and will send back flasks for a nominal fee comparable to market rate based on materials and time. I’m doing this for intellectual stimulation as opposed to a business venture. As a disclaimer, I’m still in the learning phase but have all the gear for tissue culture as I grow mushrooms and I’m confident that I’ll have a fair amount of success. If you have extra material or simply want to contribute to my pursuit of knowledge let me know and we can discuss particulars. Appreciate the consideration!

Sounds fun Dorchid! I've got a couple of pods ripening right now, and I also live in CO so there is some locality. If you're planning on this venture through the next few years (which I hope you might), I'll definitely plan on sending seeds your way. Mainly Catt/Encyclia species/primary hybrids.

Hey David! I’m just up the road in the Fort so super close. This is definitely a long game endeavor and my “lab” is in the basement so not going anywhere. Let me know if you have any extra capsules when the time comes!

I have a number of both spontaneous (= selfings) and intentional pods coming along.
I'll be happy to share the former. Before I do anything with the latter, have you had any success with your flasking so far?

Hi Kim! I have not. I plated some selfed oncidium seed last year and didn’t get any germination. I just plated some noid phal seed the other day so hopefully will have some results in a month or 2. I have such a limited number of plants that getting seed to work with is an issue. It’s my hope that folks who have some extra material would be willing share some so that I can build up the experience and knowledge to achieve consistent positive results. In the process, I would love to be able to send back flasked plants. I understand completely if you wouldn’t want to send specific crosses you’ve made and wouldn’t want to waste those precious resources considering the thought and time required to produce them on my learning, but if you have some open pollinated or extra material you’d be willing to part with it would be greatly appreciated!

I have a Sophronitis brevipedunculata that selfed... I'll keep an eye on the capsule. Doesn't look ready for a bit, but when it gets close, I'll harvest and send to you. I have other things that do that too. (Likely busy little hummingbirds are at least partially responsible. ) So I think that over the next months I can give you some things to play with.

I will be happy to send you a selfing or two. Do you want them 'green' or 'dry' stage?
The difficulty is of course, that with spontaneous selfings, I do not have the exact date that the pod was initiated, but I will try to guestimate based on the normal blooming time for the mother plant. I know that the following have spontaneous pods at the moment: - Guarianthe aurantiaca, spotted form
- Cattleya (Laelia) purpurata
- Vanda testacea

@ Roberta and Kim; That would be awesome! I'm more comfortable with green but would be happy to practice disinfecting seed as well should they be dehisced. Kindly drop a note in this thread when the time is getting close and I'll shoot you my address. Really appreciate it!

No way dude! That's awesome. Yes I'll definitely send seeds your way when I have some, and it would be cool to meet up sometime, too! I've got some family in FoCo so we visit fairly regularly.
