Cool Germination Media for Phals?

I was wondering what germination media has given you all the best results when germinating Phals. I know some of you have some "tried-and-true" media formulations that you like to use like Knudson C with other stuff added. I'd love some specifics. Thanks in advance!

This is my recipe for complex phal hybrids. It works very well.

• 13.5 grams/liter p6668 medium
• 5 grams/liter sugar
• 7.5 grams agar

pH 5.5

So, P668 plus sugar & agar? I have some P668 that already has agar. Should I just add 5 g/l of sugar?

No coconut?

Coconut is usually used for paphs. Phals germinate just fine with out it.

You could reduce the amount of p668 in half and add back the sugar, but you will have really soft media. Personally I like soft media.

In the future, I suggest you buy media with out the agar, and add your own. Gives you more freedom.

Thanks for the tips. Good stuff. Exactly what I'm looking for.

Ever successful with anything else?

Where do you get that media from?

Search for Phytotech. It's cheap and they have a huge variety. Lots of supplies and culture containers too.

Just to add to Royal's info, Phytotech even sells an Epiphyte seed sowing kit. It comes with a few types of sowing & replate media's, petri dishes, flasks, tools, etc. at a great overall price!

Wait, you can do this in petri dishes? Wouldn't that be too shallow?
