Hi- I have some Orchis italica seed coming. I have not grown orchids from seeds before. Can I grow Orchis italica from an agar medium or do they do best in soil initially? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Welcome to the forums!
If I may ask -- where did you get these seeds?
If you got them from ebay or something similar... then sorry, but most "orchid seed" sold there is illegitimate (unless you bought it from someone reputable).
Well, when they do arrive, if it looks like dust, then it might be real seeds.
As for the germination, I believe agar will work. Sorry, not very familiar with this, but I've definitely heard orchis being germinated in an agar.
Orchis is one of the genera that have been successfully grown ex-vitro in the cardboard method. If, as ES mentioned you actually receive what you ordered.

european terrestrial orchids are also cultivated on agar media as warm epiphytic orchids are. Simply germination media are differents.
and if you want "fresh" seeds from european species, ask, perhaps i could help to you with a number of orchid species.
