I prefer not to divide plants. Bigger plants produce more flowers, so I think it is best to let them get as big as they want. Of course, there may become a time when the plant gets so big that you simply don't have room to accommodate it. I have a LC Dinard 'Blue Heaven' that is growing in a 14 inch pot, which is on the verge of getting to big for me to handle, so that one may be divided in the next year or two, but typically I leave my plants in one piece.
By "two crowns" did you mean that the plant is growing in two different directions with two different new growths? Like others said, a minimum division should be two or three mature growths with at least 1 new growth starting. If your divisions were smaller than this, that may lead to excessive stress and loss of foliage. A properly divided plants will not suddenly drop leaves like that.
