Cymbidium Little Black Sambo backbulb growth

I broke this off my mother plant about 2 months ago. It's been kept on top of the leca of the large pot of another plant.

Been thinking about this Subrosa. Not sure why. That's a Cymb backbulb? The more I think about it, it looks like Catasetum. Did you mislabel? Or am I just not understanding?

I don't grow Catasetum, but do Cymbs, thus the query.

Looks like a Cym back bulb to me. Remember, they ARE related Cymbidae so some similarity in appearance is reasonable... I don't think Cyms and Catasetinae are close enough to breed very well, but I did find a couple of Cymasetum hybrids registered so they can do it . (Cyms DO breed with some other Cymbidae genera like Grammatophyllum)

Interesting. Maybe I need to go peel back an old Cym backbulb or two. I've never done so, thus never seen one "naked." Learning something new all the time. Gracias Roberta!

Actually, you should be cleaning off the remains of old leaves off both back bulbs and active ones in general - those brown sheaths give scale and other nasties a place to hide.

Starting new plants from cymbidium backbulbs by nestling them in moist perlite is what gave me the idea for semi-hydroponic culture!

(Sorry, just saw your post) This appears to me to be a Cym BB. By now, you should see more growth from that little node half way up the bulb. If so, plant it upright in a 3"-4" pot with your "mix of choice" but be sure to bury the base of the new growth. If the pot is too short to do this, use a 5" pot. The base of the new growth must be in the mix. Place in a semi shaded place and keep moist. Hopefully the bulb was not kept on its side as the growth will now be growing at a 45 degree angle to the bulb and difficult to plant up when the time comes.

The pbulb has been laid flat since I first noticed the growths. I have it sitting on top of a small pot full of leca sitting in a tray of water. The roots of both new growths have made their way well down into the leca at this point. I'll transfer the whole works into a suitably sized pot in the near future.
