New Intergeneric Oncidium hybrid

I just got home from Orchidfest at the state university. I purchased this NoID Intergeneric Oncidium hybrid. Fat bulbs and what looks like good roots. Also an immature psbulb that will be flowering in the not so distant future. Not happy that it's in moss and the vender said he had just done so a few months back. The vender is from the Illinois area and said that it's well suited for our Midwest growing conditions . Pointers would be greatly appreciated.

This is probably Oncostele Midnight Miracles, and definitely that type of breeding with Rhynchostele bictoniensis in recent ancestry. Should be fairly easy. Grow it on the cool side of typical Oncid intergeneric conditions and it should be more shade tolerant than some. I would move it to media with better drainage as the next new growth starts to form roots.

If it’s in Pro Mix (peat moss perlite type mix), repot immediately. No matter how careful I am, I can’t keep roots alive in that stuff. The faster I repot, the better the plant does.

Sphagnum is more of a judgement call. I have one that’s doing great in it, but it’s in a small well ventilated pot. If it’s in sphagnum and you want to keep it that way, I’d suggest moving it to clay or a clear plastic slotted pot.

I repot and grow most of mine in small grade orchiata, because I know it’ll work for me.

I grow my oncids and phals in a moss mix from from Repotme.com. I use clay pots for everything. Clay breathes. I water by drizzling on the top, Ray stands them in a saucer of water. The point is not to pack the moss tightly, and not to soak it. Moss gets a bad rap, and for oncids, who like to be moist, it can work great. Your Iowa weather isn't much different from Chicago weather. Try experimenting and see what suits your habits and conditions.

By the way, beautiful plant. Who was the vendor?

No sorry I don't know their name since I paid with cash rather than with a card.

They had quite a few different Oncidium Alliance and Paphiopedium. I was hoping they would have a Twinkle but they said theirs weren't in bloom so they didn't bring any. The did have an Oncostele Wildcat cheeta but I didn't pick it up although I consider it. This one was the nicer plant and had more bulbs than the Wildcat.
