Which humidifiers can be automated?
My humidifier recently died, and I would like to buy a new one, but I have a very particular project in mind for my new humidifier.
I want to have it automated (domotized?) with a smart plug. These smart plugs can be controlled via app to turn on/off the power. That way I would be able to control the humidifier connected to it from anywhere. However, there are some requirements to meet if I want to do this: the humidifier must not have electronic buttons. It must have only a physical on/off button that can be left on the ON setting so that turning on the power will automatically activate it. I don't know if I have explained myself properly. I would like it to have at least 4L capacity at least as well. Any suggestions? Anybody is using the same method and could share which humidifier model they are using? EDIT: I am referring to cool mist humidifiers. |
Good luck with your quest!
About the only ones I know of with that water capacity are console types that use a fan blowing air through a wetted wick mesh. You may have to disassemble and rewire to bypass electronics, though. Have you considered one with a built-in humidistat so you needn't even worry about remote control? |
The ultrasonic foggers are available as stand alone units. When you get them this way there's no switch at all, just the power cord. You'll have to supply a vessel for the water, and a means of maintaining the fogger at the proper depth. There are floating housings designed for exactly this purpose. All of this would be available at any decent pond supply store.

Be sure you don't leave a heated humidifier on unless it automatically shuts off when the reservoir is dry.

Ray, the one humidifier that I had and broke down was one of those with humistat, etc, and I think it was such complexity that made it break so soon. Fan blowing through wet mesh? What century are we on? I was referring to cool mist humidifiers. The one that use ultrasounds to evaporate water. Also I don't want to be opening up stuff and rewiring things. There are much simpler solutions.
Subrosa, I prefer to avoid building such things because I would need to buy a million parts. Estación Seca, cool mist humidifiers. Not the boiling water ones. And most of them shut off when the water reservoir is dry. |

Google Home para mis orquídeas - YouTube I set the thing and made a video. Enjoy the domotics for plants. |
This is what I cooked up for my enclosed habitat.
For the grow room: 2 Gallon (7'ish liters) ultrasonic humidifier https://www.amazon.com/SPT-SU-2020-U...s%2C128&sr=8-6 For the enclosed tank: I have something similar to this: VicTsing Cool Mist Humidifiers Humidifier Air Home Room Personal 790404762146 | eBay I replaced the output with a corrugated bilge pump hose from home depot: Access Denied Which feeds into some pvc tubing I drill some holes in that is mounted to the top of the tank. This ensures even distribution of the mist inside the tank. All of that is tied together with this controller: https://www.amazon.com/Inkbird-Tempe...s%2C155&sr=8-7 Which has a humidity and temperature sensor and can run 2 different devices on and off based on your set point. I'm also working on an IOT solution using smart switches but that's a longer term endeavor. I needed to stand up a habitat pretty quickly and this fit the bill nicely. |
Using Subrosa's ultrasonic foggier concept, adding something I just finished explaining on another forum, you can automate that easily:
|
to automate this a smarthings hub and a 6 in one detector that will do humidity light temp motion will turn a plug on and off as needed. you could get push or email notifications to keep track of things You jsut need the place to be in range of wifi or your internet. maybe 120 for the setup. you can use it for automating your lighting and fans and such too.

I just bought this one, which I can control from my phone, it's 1 gal or 4 liters:
