Interesting approach to mounting
 

Just received this in my regular Orchids Limited email newsletter... I haven't see this idea before, and it may be especially useful for those who want to grow mounted orchids in the house but are challenged with giving them the moisture they need.

This is very cool! I've done something similar with the grapevine balls in craft store. I stuffed the ball with a mix of sphag and sheet moss and then mounted the plant. I put a wire through the center and secured it for hanging when outside and it sat on the top of a pot when inside under lights.

I swore off mounted orchids because of their higher maintenance requirements. Now I'm gonna have to give this a try. Thanks for the idea Roberta! And may need the stuffed grape vine idea also, Katrina... so many ideas, so little time. :biggrin:

When I was in Japan last year, I saw many, many plants of all types planted in kokedama style. The balls were smaller, and I have no idea how they are made. This version adapted for mounting orchids seems very interesting!
I'd guess that it would work best (visually) with plants that don't need much strong or direct light, since all my attempts until now with live moss have failed when it got direct light...

Note that in the article, he is using dried (and dyed) sheet moss, like from a florist supply place. So it is not alive. Maybe different characteristic than the live moss? It holds some water, but not a lot - and lets air in.
