Can I help this plant?

Someone at work gave me this plant. I would like to learn what kind of plant it is and what is the care. Is it overwatered or underwatered? Are the leaves burned? I can see a couple of new shoots coming out. Apparently it wants to live and I want to help it to do well.
Cat for scale.
Thank you.

Ii can't tell you what type of plant it is, but I would guess that it has been underwatered and/or sunscorced. Good luck with it, it looks like it could be a very attractive plant if properly maintained.

Definitely, Calathea. Rattlesnake plant or prayer plant. My daughter has one and it is beautiful!

Yes, Calathea Rattlesnake. Looks sunburned, not enough water, or both.

Low light, can't tolerate direct sun. Requires fast draining but moist soil (similar to African violet). I've also found many of the Calathea to be sensitive to chloramine or chlorine which also causes brown tips.

Many plants if this sort also detest dry air -- they like it humid.

What an interesting-looking plant! It will be well worth your efforts to rehabilitate it.

Good Luck with it!
