Bulbophyllum habrotinium
1 Attachment(s)
Today was the Central Iowa Orchid Society's Speakers Day, and I meant to only get a phalaenopsis or two. But none were for sale, and instead the two growers had a lot of hybrids and species. I couldn't resist this bulbophyllum habrotinium because it was marked as easy to care for, and was actually among the least expensive on the bench. (I found exactly four google results and one image on a search and the rarity/weirdness was one of the things that attracted me to it.) While making this post I realized the name on the tag was misspelled and that was limiting my search results. The flower still looks unlike anything else and I'm excited to grow it!
My questions: -One of the other members at the event remarked that I should repot it with fresh moss soon as its medium looked rather old. Are there any special considerations I should make? -The seller (am I too new to name them?) marked them as blooming size. Is he right or is it still a seedling? It's in a 3" pot. -Can anyone guess as to whether this one will stink when it blooms? It's not exactly a turn off but I would want to be prepared. All the general bulbophyllum sites I checked didn't get more specific than "some stink, some don't" and the specific ones didn't mention it. -And finally, kind of a vanity question but how rare is this? Does anyone here grow them? Pics attached, link to the species page here |
I don't have answers to the questions but I do want to know who the seller is.

It looks like it will stink... The colour and the shape are reminiscent of a piece if rotting flesh, usually the scent goes in the same lines ... mostly though, you have to come rather close to smell it.
It may have some other more interesting scent. Some smell like fish, raw potatoes or cheese. |
Bulbos need huge amounts of water. Don't let it dry out. That's one reason the moss goes bad quickly.
