This giant plant needs an even bigger pot!

that is a great looking amethystogolssa, moving up to a larger pot, will likely need more aeration holes drilled into it. Be mindful that this plant can easily go into shock if roots are disturbed when not in active growth.
Any picture of plant blooming? Said I and then I followed your flickr link and saw a picture of one and if that is the one, it is a beautiful flower. You may be close to the plant's
maximum size... about 3 ft tall, BTW I like all your other plants too, especially the cyrtopodium and cycnoches...

Yes, this pot is actually for aquatic purposes and is built like an upside down pyramid. Each "level" has holes built into it, which you can kind of see in the third pic. I also waited until the new growths started throwing new roots. Plus, I didn't disturb the old roots and simply added new media around the existing rootball.

I actually haven't seen this one bloom!! It sent its first spike up this spring and I snapped it off by accident like a dummy. :((:((:((:(( These polyploid amethystoglossas only bloom when they're giant.

The diploid (I assume) amethystoglossa with bloom photos (which you referenced) is a fraction of the size and has bloomed several times already. I also repotted it recently. I should put them side by side and take a pic to show the difference!

I should also mention that I lived in Hawaii for about 10 years and got to see H&R specimen amethystoglossas in full bloom at shows and they are GIANT!! I'd say they were at least 5 feet tall, which includes the pot. The canes were probably approaching 2" thick!

It seems that the first pot has not been sufficiently long lasting :rofl:

thanks Steve, I went to Hawaii in 2006 and stopped by H&R as well, but did not get to see their stud plants. I would have loved to have had that chance. When my wife and I showed up, Harry and Roy were out traveling and staff was too busy packing to give tours. Maybe next time.
Your "do not disturb roots"report method s safe to do anytime and I do as well, when necessary.

BTW, along time ago at a show in South Florida, I asked Roy ( of H&R) about the amethystoglossa "orchidglade" that had seen on their lists. The plant is supposedly a natural 4N plant, from Jones and Scully and He confirmed they killed their plant when they tried to repot it out of season.
Of course the Benlate disaster killed the rest at Jones and Scully.

They grow fast!

Whoa!! I had no idea!!

Its amazing to feel how thick the polyploid leaves are on this species. Like super rigid plastic.

Holy crap, that’s a monster! I love it. I’m just over here looking at my wee little one in a 3” pot trying to encourage it by showing it pictures of yours..

Ha! I've got a coerulea growing in a 2" pot that looks up to the big guys as well!!
