Possible Pest with Doritaenopsis Newberry Parfait 'Picotee'

1 Attachment(s)
I have a Doritaenopsis Newberry Parfait 'Picotee'. I have attached a picture of a discoloration that is on the bottom part of the plant. The leaves themselves have water spots from this morning's watering.

I have been told that this might be Scale. Is that what this is? If so, How does one treat this?

If not...any ideas as to what this is and how I get rid of it.

I have also noticed these gnat looking insects flying around this specific plant.

I hope that this helps and any information would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Scale looks like little army helmets .. there is a scale that does secrete a white substance but it looks more mealy to me .. let's see what others say :)

Hi Zach,
I guess I'm blind but I do not see anything particularly wrong with your Phalaenopsis. It does look awfully wet and this might account for the gnats.
Are you familiar enough with photoshop to draw an arrow to or circle the area you are referring to?
Al

Edit..........
are you referring to the white area on the leaf on the left hand side? I thought that was reflection off the water...........if so, a sharp close-up of that area would be helpful.

Where exactly is the problem? The yellowing of the bottom leaf might be normal. Scale is a visible pest. If you have it, you should be able to see it or feel it, especially hard scale. On the other hand your roots don't look so good. Have you taken a look at all the roots lately to see how they are doing? It looks like the top ones are rotting away.

Do you mean the white dots on the leaf? and what looks like something white in the leaf juncture ? might be mealy bugs ? Gin

Okay...Since the picture that I took this morning was not so great. I am going to take another picture this evening. We also have a lot of dust/pollen here in Florida and this plant does live outside.

I saw that the roots are not in the greatest shape and will take a look at them after flowering is complete and make a total repot.

The area in which I was concerned about is at the base of the first leaf which is bright yellow basically in the center of the picture.

Thank you all for your in put.
