Question regarding Vanda and Phal roots.
 

Hello,i am a beginner in the hobby and started it some 3 months ago with a Phal and a Vanda.I have some questions regarding their roots.
Vanda:
I bought it with full bloom.The bloom lasted until one and half of the purchase.Half the roots were dried at the time of purchase and i cut them down very soon.There were(and still are) some very good roots.Also after i cut down the dead spike, top two leaves started to grow and are slowly growing as i can see.But i noticed something in some big roots.They have multiple joints and all the portions become green quickly while watering.Yet i saw some joints being darken like brownish.I decided to cut one and as expected the internal stem at that point has been dried out.Yet the below part is fresh and so is the 'mass' surround it(i.e cut down part of the root).
Is there any point to keep such parts in other similar roots, since no nutrition can be transferred to main body?

Phal:
My phal quickly got rid of it's bloom after the purchase.I decided to repot it with fresh media and find it was surrounded by compacted sphagnum moss below while upper part was coconut husk.They were very wet and half of the roots were dead and some more are yellowing.I cut down both only kept the fresh green roots and then reported with new moss and husk, less compactly.Since then two months have passed and while the newest leaf is growing slowly, the bottom leaves are also drying out.But i see no aerial root appearance.
Should i be concerned since inside the media some 4-5 good roots were left?

I live in tropic(in India).And upcoming months are going to be very hot.I water my Vanda everyday and the Phal twice a week.

Don't cut Vanda roots. All the ones you cut were probably alive. When watered they turn green. When dry they are white when newer, then brown when older.

Most people in hot climates water Vandas every morning, and sometimes early afternoon, too, if the temperatures are hot (say over 38C.) They are often grown hanging by a wire on the stem, with the roots dangling in the air. Vandas cannot take full tropical sun all day long. Dappled shade is good, with perhaps a little morning sun. They also grow and flower better with frequent fertilizing.

Phal roots need lots of air. If the roots are trapped in wet, airless medium they rot. Moss and coconut husk are OK as the medium if you let them dry out completely between waterings. If you are in a humid climate you might have more success mounting the Phal on a piece of wood. You would need to water frequently, almost every day when it does not rain. Phals are shade plants.
