Easy Vandaceous Orchids A begginer Can Grow?
 

Hello i last posted about my Ang. Leonis And id like to report that it is doing well and creating a new leaf and 3 new roots as we speak!!!!!! Mehitabel helped alot as well as CJ and Ross!!!!! but back to the post question at hand. I would like to know if there are any EASY and SMALL vandaceous orchids that a begginer like me Can Grow? i dont want to go and get another Angraecum cuz i know ill kill it or come close like my leonis. so is there any. are Neofinetas easy? or what about Ascocendas? i hear they are small and easy but i want some advice from some experts or anyone more experienced than I.

Asconcendas seem to be really forgiving plants ( I have 2 ;) ) And they don't get super huge. I have a Neofinetia falcata as well, that I've just repotted, that seems to be doing well also. It's not yet flowering size, so time will have to tell on that one... but so far he looks great :)

Also, try to avoid Sanderiana hybrids if you can because they are difficult to bloom. The little intergenerics do well though, Neostylis, etc. Try vase culture, there is a thread about it on here somewhere.

I am far from being a Vanda expert but I will try to help. - - - I grow in my condo basement.

I have found that Ascocenda Princess Mikasa is very easy to grow, and bloom. Just give it lots of light, good humidity, a gentle breeze, and supply it's watering and fert needs. It will respond well and reward you with blooms.

I fertilize mine weakly every time I water it. I was told they are heavy feeders.

I have a Princess Mikasa 'Indigo' which blooms for me twice a year. It's in a wooden basket with some lava rock, no other medium, under high light. I mist it until the roots turn nice and green every day, every other day it gets a good watering. If you can do it, it would like to be dipped into the sink for a few minutes every other day. I don't do that because it would be too difficult with my setup.

As for Vandaceous plants, any of the Angraecoid class should be relatively easy. Here are a few to look up

Aerangis luteo-alba var. rhodosticta
Neofinetia falcata
Sedira japonica

And also consider the Tolumnia hybrids. Tolumnia are called equitant Oncidiums or sometimes mini Oncidiums. All of these are pretty easy to bring into bloom if given the proper conditions.

I am in SW GA and have about 20+ Vanda/Ascocenda. They like high light, plenty of water, and fairly heavy feeders. Mine hang outside during summer months and are watered with a hose every day. They love the heat. During winter I back off the water to every couple or three days and never go below 55 degrees. Vascostylis Pine River Blue is a beauty and usually blooms twice a year. I am lucky to have R F Fuks at my back door (So. Fla) as he has many, many beauties to choose from. Good luck.
