Phal lueddemanniana - Not sure if the ID is correct
I already posted photos of this orchid in another thread where I was sharing some photos of my several of blooming Phals. But it's not the best place to get an answer to a specific question.
I bought this plant as a Phal lueddemanniana a couple years ago. It bloomed last year already, but I never really paid careful attention to the flowers. When comparing it to the many photos of this species online, it just looks off. The flower shape isn't quite the same, the markings are less dense, there is much less yellow at the base of the lip, and the edges of the lips are fuzzier than most. But there also seems to be quite some variation in this species, so the ID could also be correct. My doubts are heightened by the fact that this would not be the first mislabeled plant from this particular vendor.... The photos again: Full blooms https://shutterbug.ponzio.net/_data/...20d5b6d-me.jpg Lip detail https://shutterbug.ponzio.net/_data/...3d37612-me.jpg |
I can't help with the ID question - but just wanted to say that it's gorgeous!

Indeed! And the photo quality also helps.;)

I looked in Orchidwiz, where there lots and lots of photos... there is a lot of variation in color density of the markings, but in all of the photos, the yellow patch at the base of the lip does go all the way across. So I think you are right that it is incorrectly labeled - knowing what it is, a lot harder than knowing what it isn't...

I completely forgot about Orchidwiz! My version is extremely outdated and I forgot I had it, but it's still a great resource.
So I'm not alone to have doubts on ID. I used to have a Phal bastianii (tossed it last year due to disease), but I don't think it's label mix-up since it's doesn't look like a bastianii either. I'm wondering if it isn't a Phal lueddemanniana primary hybrid (maybe lueddemanniana x bastianii ?) and the second half of the name didn't make it on the label for some reason. I'll never know for sure if the ID is correct, I've had it around 4 years and anyway that vendor never once replied to emails about 2 other mislabeled plants from him. (I've since stopped buying plants there for a variety of reasons) |
I think I may have already replied, but will again. The color is stunning and great pics. I can't help with an ID.
