Repotting keike
1 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone,
I was gifted this orchid keiki. It has a lot of aerial roots, how to repot my new phal? Thanks |
What a delightful gift. With the well-developed roots I'd say this is a plant ripe for mounting. I personally use either sticks of osmunda rafts. I prefer sticks because they're more natural but osmunda is better for water retention.

I would put the whole thing in a bucket of water for a soak, or better yet, kelp fertilizer if you have it. This will soften the roots to prevent damage during the potting/mounting process. If you don't plant to mount it which will require frequent or daily watering, use a chunky planting medium. Bark chunks are good.
Gently twist the plant down into the pot, encouraging the roots to circle around the perimeter of the pot. I would clip the bloom to help the plant get used to it's new home. |
Well, I would have a different approach if you don't want to mount it.
I would lay it on the medium (without touching it) and leave those roots in the air (probably they will die anyway 'cause are not adapted to be buried in the medium). Then I would keep the medium moist util new roots start to grow. They will grow into the medium and fix the plant. |
I intend to put it in a pot with bark.
I think twisting the plant is the better option. Thanks guys!! |
